MahaRERA Halts Registrations for Nearly 20,000 Real Estate Agents

Due to non-compliance with updated regulations, around 20,000 real estate agents have had their registrations suspended by MahaRERA.

These agents either did not obtain the required competency certificate or failed to register their certificate on the MahaRERA website.

Consequently, they are now barred from operating as agents. Starting this year, MahaRERA enforced a new rule that mandates real estate agents to undergo training, pass a competency exam, and register their certificate to continue their work.

On Thursday, Maharashtra's real estate regulator announced the suspension of 20,000 real estate brokers' registrations, leaving only 13,000 registered agents in the state. Initially, there were 47,000 agents registered with the regulator, which began registering property transaction intermediaries in 2017.

Earlier this year, 13,785 agents lost their registration for failing to renew their licenses.

An official statement revealed that the registration of another 20,000 agents has been suspended for a year for not obtaining the competency certificate or not uploading it to the regulator's website.

These agents can renew their licenses if they complete the required training, obtain the competency certificate, and upload it to the portal within a year.

An official mentioned that approximately 5,500 new candidates are expected to take the competency exam next month to register as agents.

Ajoy Mehta, the chairman of MahaRERA, emphasised the importance of agents being knowledgeable about the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016.

"MahaRERA has mandated that agents undergo training, pass the exam, and obtain certification. This decision, made on January 10, 2023, was extended multiple times before becoming compulsory for all agents on January 1, 2024," he said.
